Benjamin "tuned"

Well I went ahead and tuned the Benji before the Easter weekend. This rifle and the Phantom 500 use the same piston. I ordered the Phantom 1000 piston and like I did with the Phantom 500 , swapped out the piston and did a quick tune up on the rifle. I had problems not being able to separate the barrel from the receiver forks. So I had to do the tune with barrel attached, which required me to be a bit more careful so as not to damage the gun. This also meant I was not going to use a spring compressor. Removing the spring and piston was not that difficult without the compressor, however putting it back together required some effort. If I had the assistance of another pair of hands it would have been a breeze to keep pressure on the receiver while I lined up and pushed back the retaining pin. Ah well I got it done. I have to say that this gun unlike the Phantom was absolutely soaking in lube when I opened her up. It was dripping!

Anyway on Easter weekend I went up north and did some target shooting and chronied her up .

Here are the post tune readings.

Benjamin Hollow points 14.3 g

675.3
687.7
681.9
671
676.1
678.4 avg fps

RWS Hobby 11.9 g
735.6
736.4
734
735.4
738.5
735.98 avg fps

Crosman pointed 14.3 g
678.1
671.1
672.6
674
672.9
673.74 avg fps

So as you can see I got pretty much the same results as I did when I did the Phantom 500 tune. Im contemplating adding a few washers to squeeze out a litle more power but I find myself with little time to take it apart again at this point. Instead what time I do have I like to shoot this rifle. Even though the powerplants are the same as the Phantom 500 I can honestly say that this gun is a much nicer gun to shoot. I find it to be very accurate as well. At this time Ive only punched paper targets and soup cans.

  1. I just bought the Benj. Classic .22 (495fps)
Are parts readily available to "tune up" this gun?

  2. Yes they are. The only thing I replaced at this time is the piston. I used the Phantom 1000 piston.

  3. With the Phantom and this model sharing similar internals, I assume the disassembly/tuneup procedure on your phantom page would be applicable?

  4. Yes , though with the Benji I was unable to Remove the barrel block pivot bolt to separate it from the receiver forks.(step 4 on the guide) Apparently some had the same issue with the phantom. However I was still able to do the tune, I just had to be extra careful not to damage the barrel. Go slowly and you should have no issues.

  5. dude !!great review and info!i have this rifle too and gonna do the piston upgrade as well.but what else can i do to increase the velocity just a little more?your average with 14.3 g pellets is about 675.i wanna get it to 700 with those pellets or 750 if you have a trick up your sleeve!!! well heres some info i came accross on our rifle.this guy makes a cool tofet to replace the stock one and increses the velocity supossidly.tell me what you think about it...hope it helps you as well. Please reply back!need your help.thanks!

  6. Im sorry Ive got no tricks left! I suppose you can try what you've mentioned, let us know the results. The only thing I can think of to bring it up closer to the superstreak big brother is replacing the barrel to the same length, which is if I recall 3 inches more.

  7. Ok cool! But i made a great discovery last night.i have the schematics for the classic.22 and the s.s.now all the parts are difrent but a couple of things are the same.basically the codes that crosman uses on the schematics identify the piece somewhat.so i verified the compression tube and the barrel crosman codes for the classic 22 and the s.s and conluded that the barell is 3 inches longer and so is the compression chamber(based on the codes).3 inches in the chamber for more power and 3 inches the barell for more accuracy.what do you think?also did you eber chrony crow magnum pellets and silver arrow pellets?!! Thanks bro!

  8. Actually barrel length does increase the velocity as well. http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2007/08/how-barrel-length-affects-velocity-in.html
I have not used those pellets so I have no chrony numbers for them.

  9. amazing info!!! thanks a lot! thats crazy.i never would of thought.but those results are by doubling the barell length in that example to get an extra 150 fps or so.im very curious to know if the super streak barell will fit and how much velocity it will increase with 3 inches more! Thanks again!!

  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFThRvTIWVE

this is that custom (tofet) piece i was talking about b4.i asked this dude about the results and he said he got a solid 50 FPS....this can get the benji at a good 725-750 FPS consistently with 14.3 gr. pellets!!pretty beasty!

  11. Oh so that's what you meant. I refer to that piece as the tophat. I guess there is more than one terminology for the part.
I believe the benjamin super streak (not the classic) doesn't even use a tophat ( tofet). Some air rifles don't have them.
    Thanks for the link.
